The concept is actually pretty simple. When cruising around the web we often find things that we find interesting and we want to share them with others. We do this by sharing the URL (or web address) of the page with other people we think will find it interesting.
Unfortunately, these URLs are often very long and can be pretty unwieldy. To make matters worse, the tools with which we typically share these URLs (think email or instant messaging) often introduce inconsistencies in the formatting of the URL making it unusable for its intended purpose.
In a perfect world, all URLs would be neat, tidy and easy to pass around to our friends. Until then, Shrinkify will offer to swap your long, unwieldy URL for a neat, tidy one that is ready to be passed around in email or instant messages and remain intact. This short and friendly URL will act as a guide, redirecting your friends' browsers to the same web destination as the original long URL.
That's actually a pretty good question, especially considering the sheer number of services out there that offer to substitute a shorter URL for a longer one. The simplest answer is that we think the concept is a pretty useful one, but none of the existing services really provide an ideal execution of the idea. Since we thought we could build a better service, that's just what we set out to do.
